Leave the current state, completed evidence, and next concrete action instead of a transcript of your session.

A Technical Handoff Note the Next Person Can Use

A handoff note is not a diary. The next person needs to know where the work stands, which evidence is reliable, and what action will move it forward. They rarely need every command that led there.

Lead with the outcome or current blocker. “The parser change is implemented and tested locally; the integration test is blocked by the unavailable search service” gives the reader an immediate map.

Identify the work precisely

Include the repository, branch, relevant revision, and whether the checkout contains uncommitted changes. If work is split across branches or worktrees, state which one owns each part.

Do not describe uncommitted edits as a released change. Likewise, do not say a branch was pushed unless the remote state was checked.

Summarize the behavior

Explain the problem and resulting behavior in a few sentences. Link the main files rather than listing every touched line. Highlight persisted contracts, configuration changes, or compatibility concerns that affect continuation.

If a design choice was made, preserve the reason when it cannot be recovered from the code alone. “Kept serial execution because the test helper shares one database” is more useful than “ran tests.”

Retain the verification boundary

List the relevant checks and outcomes. Distinguish passed, failed, skipped, and blocked. Include the environment where the checks ran.

For a failure, retain the smallest useful error and its location. Do not paste secret-bearing logs or a giant terminal transcript. The next person should be able to reproduce the problem without extracting the important line from pages of noise.

Name the next action

Give one concrete continuation step, not a broad instruction to “finish testing.” For example: start the documented local search service, then rerun the named integration test. If user input is required, state the missing decision and why it matters.

Avoid marking work complete merely because you are stopping. The handoff should preserve unfinished requirements honestly.

Preserve authority boundaries

State whether commit, push, deployment, or external communication is authorized. A new operator should not have to infer authority from a previous person’s enthusiasm.

A strong handoff makes continuity boring. The next person can verify the starting state, perform the next bounded action, and continue the same task without reopening decisions that were already settled.
